I’d been living here for a couple weeks, and every day I’d been tempted to call up Talia, but I hadn’t. I couldn’t bear to be rejected again. If her mind had changed, if she’d decided against marrying Jake, she would have come and told me that, right? I’d left the ball in her court, and she hadn’t said anything to me. So, I assumed that meant her marriage to him was still on.
I had tried to get a glimpse of her ring at the grocery store, but she’d had her hands below her cart, and it’d been impossible to see. I’d known it was there, though. She’d have called if it wasn’t.
Unless.. unless she’d decided to call it off but hadn’t told me because she really didn’t have the same feelings for me that I had for her. Maybe she just hadn’t wanted to get my hopes up by telling me it was over.
Either option sounded awful. There was literally no good reason for why I hadn’t heard from her, which was why I’d been forcing myself not to call.
But running in to her at the grocery store had felt like fate. Despite my best efforts to stay away, I’d still run into her. What could that have been other than destiny thrusting us back together?
Okay, maybe that was a little naive. We lived in the same city after all. We’d been bound to run into each other at some point. Still, I decided to take it as a sign that I was supposed to have reached out to her. It’d taken every ounce of courage I’d had to ask her to dinner, but once I finally had, I was thrilled she’d said yes. I was going see her tonight, which was both wonderful and terrible.
Wonderful because, of course, I missed her with every piece of my heart and wanted desperately to see her. But terrible because seeing her and knowing she couldn’t be mine, that I could only be her friend while she married someone she didn’t even truly love, was going to be so difficult for me.
But I wasn’t going to focus on the latter. Tonight, I was just going to enjoy her company because it had been over a month since I’d gotten to see her. And, after a month of no-contact, I was beginning to think I could do the just friends thing if it meant I had her in my life still. Having her around as a friend instead of a lover wasn’t ideal, but it was better than not having her around at all.
When I arrived at Angelo’s, she was already there waiting for me. And wow, she looked gorgeous. She had on this black and white striped tank top and a black bell skirt that bellowed away from her hips to her knees. I could tell she had put extra effort into her hair and makeup, too, which, admittedly, seemed a bit cruel to me.
Why get all dressed up when she knew
